How to choose a gaming keyboard

Most keyboard decisions come down to four things: how big it is, what the switches feel like, how it connects and how much desk space you have. Work through them in this order and the shortlist makes itself.

1. Pick the size first

Size changes how you play more than any spec. Smaller boards leave more room for your mouse arm; bigger ones keep every key you use for work.

  • 60% and 65%: no function row, and 65% adds arrow keys. Best for low mouse sensitivity and small desks.
  • 75%: a compact board that keeps the function row and arrows. The AULA F75, F75MAX and F75PRO are 75% boards, and the L99 is a 75% board with a touchscreen.
  • 96% and 100%: nearly everything including the number pad. The AULA F99PRO is a 96% layout.

2. Understand the switch

Linear switches press smoothly with no bump and are the usual choice for games. Tactile and clicky switches add feedback you can feel or hear, which many people prefer for typing.

The other choice is the sensor type. Magnetic (Hall Effect) switches let you set how far a key must travel before it registers and support Rapid Trigger, which resets a key the moment it starts to rise. Standard mechanical switches have a fixed actuation point. Our guide on magnetic and mechanical keyboards goes through the difference in detail.

3. Decide how it connects

Tri-mode boards connect over a 2.4GHz receiver, Bluetooth or a USB-C cable, so one keyboard works for your gaming PC, laptop and tablet. For competitive play most people use the 2.4GHz receiver or the cable.

4. Check the small things that matter later

These features do not show up in a first impression but decide how long you enjoy the board.

  • Hot-swappable sockets let you change switches without soldering.
  • Gasket mounting and sound-dampening layers change how the board feels and sounds.
  • Keycap material and legends: dye-sublimated keycaps resist wear better than printed ones.
  • A volume knob or small screen is a convenience, not a requirement.
