Magnetic vs mechanical keyboards
Both types are mechanical in the everyday sense: you press a keycap on a spring-loaded stem. The difference is how the keyboard notices that you pressed it.
How a standard mechanical switch works
Inside the switch, two metal contacts touch when the stem reaches a fixed point, usually around 2 mm down. That point is the actuation point and it cannot be changed. Release the key and the contacts separate again at a fixed point on the way up.
How a magnetic switch works
A magnetic switch has a small magnet in the stem and a sensor on the board that measures how close the magnet is. Because the board knows the exact position of the key at every moment, the actuation point becomes a setting. You can make it very short for fast reactions or longer to avoid accidental presses.
What Rapid Trigger does
With Rapid Trigger the key resets as soon as it moves up a tiny distance and fires again as soon as you press down, instead of waiting to pass a fixed point. In games where you tap-strafe or stop precisely, this makes movement feel sharper. The AULA WIN 68HE, HERO 68HE, F75HE, AG60PRO, AG60 MAX and AG75 ULTRA are magnetic boards.
Who should choose which
Neither type is better for everybody.
- Choose magnetic if you play fast shooters or rhythm games and want to tune the keys to your hands.
- Choose standard mechanical if you mostly type, want the widest range of switch feels and keycap sets, or prefer a simpler board.
- Magnetic boards usually come with software for the settings, so plan a few minutes to set one up.
